In 1932, the medical school was created to help students live out their medical dreams. The M.D. degree program has been divided into four years. The first two years comprise foundational coursework in filed like anatomy and science. Students must pass the first stage of the USMLE examination. The third year is mandatory clerkships while the last year involves the combination of elective and mandatory clerkships.

Before any students will graduate, they must have passed the second stage of the USMLE examination. They have gone into collaboration with four centers for students to have maximum medical training such as Shriners Children’s Hospital, the Overton Brooks Veterans Affairs Medical Centre, University Health, and Willis-Knighton.  Besides their dual degree programs, they have both master’s and doctorate’s programs such as Master’s in occupational therapy, Physician Assistants, Communication Disorders, and Public Health.

Furthermore, for their doctorate, they have programs like Microbiology and Immunology, Cellular Biology and Anatomy, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Pharmacology, Molecular and Cellular Physiology, Toxicology, and Neuroscience. Since it is a public university or government-sponsored, Louisiana residents are given preference when it involves admission. When it involves admitting foreign students, they only admit 10% of the total population.

The process of application is through the AMCAS platform and prospective students must undergo the MCAT, have pre-medical experience, obtain recommendation letters, and many others. They have dual degree programs like other medical schools in Louisiana which are M.D. and MPH program, M.D. and MBA, M.D. and Ph.D. program.

Also, they have accelerated medical program options for students to finish a course in different years – (M.D/MPH) within four years, M.D./MBA in five years, TAP-TP program in four years. These different programs combine an M.D. degree with a bachelor’s degree. Also, there is a rural medical program that offers students opportunities to enroll in other universities outside the United States.
