It was established in 1921 as the Allahabad University and is the second oldest university in India after the University of Calcutta. State University Allahabad (SUA) was founded in the year 1887 by the then Governor of Uttar Pradesh Sir James Ramsay. Originally, it was known as Allahabad Higher Secondary School and it was only after Sir. James Ramsay visited the United States and he decided to add the word “State” to the school’s name.

The university initially operated from a single building on King George Street in Allahabad, but it soon outgrew this facility and moved to its present location on Park View Road in 1931.
