If you have always wanted to study at a large university in your own country and make sure to get the most out of your degree, then this might be your best chance.
History of the University of Johannesburg
The origins of the University of Johannesburg can be traced back to 1883 when a private school, called the Witwatersrand Seminary, was founded in Johannesburg. The seminary offered courses in theology and law and was eventually renamed the University of Witwatersrand. In 1896, the university’s first-degree program, in medicine, commenced. The university then began to offer other degree programs, including arts and sciences.
In 1921, South Africa’s first university senate was formed and it consisted of representatives from universities across the country. The senate decided that a new university should be established in Johannesburg. In 1926, an act was passed by the South African Parliament granting a charter to the new university. The University of Johannesburg (UJ) opened its doors in 1928 with 752 students enrolled.
During apartheid, UJ became one of the most important universities in South Africa because it was one of only two black-only universities open to students from all racial groups. It also became known for its strong research credentials. In 1991, UJ became fully multiracial and today has about 50% white students and 50% black students enrolled.
